The Scoop on Bone Broth

Bone broth does not sound very appetizing- let's just be real! But when you actually have it, you realize that it is literally just a soup base, but this soup base is different. It is one of the most nutrient dense, healing foods that are available on this planet. It has even become so popular that there are places that sell to-go cups of broth only! Bone broth can be made out of beef, chicken, fish, turkey or lamb bones. It was originally made by our ancestors, as a way to use every last bit of an animal. Bones, marrow, tendons and ligaments that you can’t eat directly are boiled and simm...

Caramel Coloring

Caramel coloring… sounds appealing, right? Caramel coloring is an additive that literally serves no purpose except to enhance the color of certain foods and products. Unlike the caramel you might make at home by melting sugar in a saucepan, the artificial brown coloring is made by reacting sugars with ammonia and sulfites under high pressure and temperatures. The main place you can find this coloring is soda, but it is in many other things that you wouldn’t even think of- breads, cereals, donuts, fruit preserves, ice cream, pet food, potato chips, cooked meat and poultry, spices, flavored t...

Jackfruit as a Meat Substitute

This is a post mainly aimed for our vegan or vegetarian members, but it is certainly something that anyone can try! Today we are going to tell you about jackfruit. What is it you ask? Jackfruit is a tropical fruit that is native to India, Southeast Asia, and Brazil. It is a big fruit, larger than a watermelon. In the United States, it is usually sold canned, frozen or dried, and one place that I know of who sells it is Whole Foods. Why am I telling you this? It is because it can be used as a meat substitute! Unripe jackfruit has a sort of “shredded” texture and look to it. It doesn’t real...

Why You Should Choose Full-Fat Dairy

We have been told all our lives, and many of us have come to believe, that fat is bad for you. Yes, there are certain fats that are not good, but the fat in dairy is not necessarily one of them. There are four types of dairy milk: whole, 2%, low-fat and skim. Whole milk contains 3.25% milkfat, 2% contains (you guessed it) 2%, low-fat has 1% and skim has less than .05%. Most of this fat is saturated fat which, for a longtime was considered unhealthy. But research is proving that wrong. You are more likely to gain weight if you drink skim milk than you would if you drank whole milk. Why? When...
